Send conversions to Google Analytics 4
Summary
Section titled “Summary”KonversAI can send an event to Google Analytics 4 every time a visitor starts a chat or becomes a qualified lead. You connect your GA4 property once, then choose the event name GA4 should record for each KonversAI event.
Marketing teams use this to see which campaigns bring in real leads, not just page views. You can mark the events as key events in GA4, and import them into Google Ads to bid on them.
You set this up on the Conversion tracking screen in the KonversAI console, under Settings. The screen has Where signals are sent at the top and a table called What to send where below it.
Who can do this
Section titled “Who can do this”You need a role with permission to view and change workspace settings, and conversion tracking must be switched on for your workspace. Contact KonversAI support to switch it on.
Before you start
Section titled “Before you start”Conversion tracking is switched off for every workspace until you ask for it. The Conversion tracking item does not appear under Settings until KonversAI enables it. Contact support to have it switched on.
Your website must already run Google Analytics 4. KonversAI sends each event for the visitor GA4 already knows, using the Google Analytics cookie on your website. A visitor without that cookie cannot be matched, so KonversAI does not send an event for that visitor.
You need two values from GA4:
- The Measurement ID of your web data stream. It looks like
G-ABC123XYZ. In GA4, open Admin, then Data streams, then your web stream. - A Measurement Protocol API secret for the same data stream. On the same data stream page in GA4, open Measurement Protocol API secrets and create one.
The chat widget on your website must collect the Google Analytics cookie. In the KonversAI console, open Settings, then Widget, then the chat tab, expand Conversion tracking and tick Capture ad click IDs. KonversAI reads the cookie only from visitors who granted marketing consent.
- In the KonversAI console, open Settings, then Conversion tracking.
- Under Where signals are sent, select Connect Google Analytics 4.
- In Name, type a label for this connection, such as the name of your website.
- In Measurement ID, type the measurement ID from GA4, such as
G-ABC123XYZ. - In Measurement Protocol API secret, paste the API secret you created in GA4.
- Leave Data collection on EU (recommended) unless your GA4 property collects data outside the EU.
- In Currency, type the three-letter currency code for conversion values,
such as
NOK. - Select Save. The connection appears as a card with the status Not tested, and it is switched off.
- Select Test. KonversAI checks the event with Google, sends one test
event named
konversai_test_event, and shows the result on the card. - In GA4, open Admin, then DebugView, and check that the event
konversai_test_eventappears within a minute. - In What to send where, find the column for your GA4 connection. In the
row Conversation started, Lead submitted, or both, type the event
name GA4 should record, such as
konversai_lead. KonversAI saves the name when you leave the field. - Optionally, type a value in the field under the event name. KonversAI reports the value to GA4 in the currency of the connection.
- On the connection card, select Switch on. KonversAI sends nothing to GA4 until you do this.
What does “Test passed” mean on my Google Analytics 4 connection?
Section titled “What does “Test passed” mean on my Google Analytics 4 connection?”Test passed means Google accepted the shape of the test event from
KonversAI. It does not prove that the Measurement Protocol API secret is
right, because Google does not check the secret during a test. To check the
secret, look for the event konversai_test_event in GA4 DebugView after you
select Test. If the event does not
appear within a minute, create a new API secret in GA4 and paste it into the
connection.
Why are fewer leads showing in GA4 than in KonversAI?
Section titled “Why are fewer leads showing in GA4 than in KonversAI?”KonversAI sends an event to Google Analytics 4 only when two things are true. First, the visitor granted marketing consent on your website. Second, the visitor had a Google Analytics cookie when the chat started. On the Conversion tracking screen, select Show recent deliveries on the GA4 connection card. Each event that was not sent says why, such as No marketing consent or Nothing this platform can match the visitor on (no click id, cookie or contact). Websites that set the Google Analytics cookie from a server, rather than from the page, do not let KonversAI read it.
Which event names can I use for Google Analytics 4?
Section titled “Which event names can I use for Google Analytics 4?”Google Analytics 4 accepts names of up to 40 letters, digits or underscores
that start with a letter, such as konversai_lead. GA4 reserves some names and
prefixes for itself. On the Conversion tracking screen, KonversAI refuses a
name that starts with _, firebase_, ga_, google_ or gtag, and names
GA4 reserves, such as session_start. The message “GA4 reserves this name.
Choose another.” means you typed a reserved name.
How do I stop sending one event to Google Analytics 4?
Section titled “How do I stop sending one event to Google Analytics 4?”On the Conversion tracking screen, find the cell in What to send where for that event and your GA4 connection. Delete the event name and leave the field. The cell then shows Not sent, and KonversAI stops sending that event to GA4. To stop sending everything to GA4, select Switch off on the connection card.
Can I use a Google Analytics 4 event to bid in Google Ads?
Section titled “Can I use a Google Analytics 4 event to bid in Google Ads?”Yes. In GA4, mark the event name you chose in What to send where as a key event. Then link your GA4 property to Google Ads and import the key event as a conversion. Google Ads then counts a chat or a lead from KonversAI as a conversion from the ad that brought the visitor.
Why did my Google Analytics 4 connection switch itself off?
Section titled “Why did my Google Analytics 4 connection switch itself off?”KonversAI switches a connection off when Google refuses many deliveries in a row. The connection card then shows the status Error and the reason. Select Test to find the problem, fix the Measurement ID or the Measurement Protocol API secret with Edit, then select Switch on.
Does KonversAI send visitors’ email addresses to Google Analytics 4?
Section titled “Does KonversAI send visitors’ email addresses to Google Analytics 4?”No. KonversAI sends Google Analytics 4 the event name, the optional value, and the identifier GA4 already set in the visitor’s Google Analytics cookie. Email addresses and phone numbers are not sent to GA4.
Can I send conversions to ChatGPT Ads, LinkedIn or Google Ads directly?
Section titled “Can I send conversions to ChatGPT Ads, LinkedIn or Google Ads directly?”Yes, for the platforms enabled for your workspace. On the Conversion tracking screen, a platform that is not available yet shows as coming soon or not enabled for this workspace under Where signals are sent. See Send conversions to ChatGPT Ads, Send conversions to LinkedIn and Send conversions to Google Ads. Sending straight to Google Ads is coming soon; until then, import GA4 key events into Google Ads. To send events to your own system, see Send conversions to your own systems.
